Truth & Tragedy is the hardcore band your mothers, teachers and priests warned you about. Whether you have a reason to rage or you’re in the market for another, T&T have plenty to go around: if it’s their heavy riffs and unforgiving breakdowns you’re after, or Aaron’s coarse screams and predilection for guns, violence and outlaws, you might want to lend an ear.
Formed in Bamberg, Germany in 2020, the US/German group are the lovechild of lockdown boredom and a predisposition for being loud. Whether in the studio or on the stage, the gang let loose with their head-banging, concussion-inducing riffs, monstrously tantalizing breakdowns, and dizzying guitar solos that are sure to get your hackles up.
For screams that have neighbors unsure of whether to call the police or an exorcist, and lyrics that pull on old country outlaw ballads, gunslinger anthems, and his own experiences as a soldier in Afghanistan, Aaron takes you with him on the adventures, traumas, victories and ghosts which are at the heart of the band’s music.
At times nihilistic, occasionally vengeful and always emotionally raw, Truth & Tragedy is exploding onto the hardcore scene, bringing a little darkness and a little light, and a whole lot of noise.
The band initially formed as a duo between Aaron and Freddy in the midst of the Corona Virus Epidemic, during which government restrictions and national lockdown prevented them from engaging with their previous five-man band. Singer Aaron and guitarist Freddy formed their duo initially as a side project, of which quickly gathered momentum and became Truth & Tragedy.
Within two months of forming, their independently released EP ‘Thanks For Nothing’ was launched, with the process of completing their debut album underway. They released their first single, ‘Helmand’ in December 2020. In January 2021 they signed with Artillery Music Group of Kingside Records music label, with whom they released their debut album ‘Innocence Abandoned’ in June 2021.
In 2021, the band was joined by guitarist Kai, bassist Vitali and drummer Domi for live shows, where Truth & Tragedy have since shared the stage with bands such as Oceans, Our Mirage, Watch Out Stampede and Marathonmann.
The band’s musical style can be described mainly as a mix of post hardcore and metalcore, while bringing in stylistic aspects of melodic hardcore, punk, pop punk, slamcore and metal, as well as non-traditional musical and lyrical influences from country music and jazz. The band named bands like Casey, Stick To Your Guns and Being As An Ocean as their musical influences.
The band divides song writing into two aspects; Freddy composes and records the music, with Aaron writing and recording the lyrics. Freddy draws on his experience as a trained jazz and classical musician, combining the rhythmic and melodic complexities of these genres into the band's music.
Singer and lyricist Aaron draws inspiration for his lyrics from his time serving as a combat engineer in Afghanistan, as well as taking inspiration from country-style storytelling and character-based narratives.
The lyrics deal with themes such as drugs, alcohol, guns and violence, as well as PTSD, alienation and trauma. T&T's single “Helmand” focuses on biographical experiences and emotional conflict in the aftermath of Aarons time served in Helmand Province, a theme further explored in their debut album, ‘Innocence Abandoned’.
